Specialist Clinics

Marek has been actively involved in clinical research to establish an evidence based practice in the application of Chinese medicine since 1998. He received his master’s degree, supervised by the Middlesex/Beijing University of TCM, with a distinction for his research paper on applications of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of female unexplained infertility. Marek is a member of the British Fertility Society (BFS), a national multidisciplinary organisation representing professionals practising in the field of reproductive medicine. He is also a member of The International Society for Mild Approaches in Assisted Reproduction (ISMAAR), which aims to promote mild and safe assisted techniques and to make Assisted Reproduction Technique (ART) more physiological.

Fertility

As the definition of unexplained infertility is still debatable in Western medical sciences   Chinese medicine provides a safe and is thought to be effective intervention to support couples, aimed at regulating and improving reproductive physiology and general health.

Conditions which may interfere with prospective parents achieving pregnancy:

  • Irregular periods
  • Painful periods
  • Anovulation
  • PMS
  • PCOS
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Low sperm quality
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Chronic prostatitis
  • Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS)

There is growing evidence that acupuncture can improve semen quality: volume, count, morphology, motility, liquefaction and fragmentation, and so may improve the chances of natural conception and of ART.

Clinical research conducted at our centre between 2000 and 2007 also suggests that combining more recent contemporary TCM methodologies with specific information borrowed from Western biology and medical diagnostic procedures more efficiently improves gametes’ health and therefore may increase the chances of a favourable outcome.

However, it should be emphasized that to improve the reproductive health of both the man and woman can be a lengthy process of 3 to 6 months or even sometimes longer.

During your initial consultation you will be provided with a tailor made acupuncture or herbal medicine programme, according to your condition, which will also include lifestyle and dietary advice.

Pregnancy and Childbirth

Acupuncture is an ideal, safe, drug free solution to a multitude of problems that arise during pregnancy and childbirth. The specialist clinic also offers a series of pre-birth acupuncture sessions, in the final weeks of pregnancy, to prepare women for the most efficient labour. We also provide a consultation/workshop for couples on acupressure during labour. These excellent hands on techniques are easy to learn and could make a huge difference to the comfort of your labour.

Postnatal period

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have a very long standing tradition of providing care for women recovering from childbirth. Same postnatal complaints may require the intervention of conventional medicine. You should therefore consult your midwife or GP if you develop persistent heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, sharp piercing abdominal pain, raised temperature.

ART

Improving the general health of both partners, before undergoing fertility treatment of Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) can be beneficial.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine provide an excellent supportive element to combat stress and the psychological implications of both failed and successful assisted conception treatments .  There is also strong evidence that acupuncture conducted before and after embryo transfer procedure, can boost the fertility outcome of IVF.
